I started this piece 3 years ago, painting symbols on the canvas and from that an outline of a woman became clear, she represented to me a spirt of nature.
I continued this piece, experimenting with continuous line drawing to create her face and neck to reflect a tree. Still very much a part of me wanting to ground myself and connect with nature. It was at this time a tree next to my art studio was removed and I brought some pieces of wood into my studio.
I created rubbings on tissue paper using paints and crayon of the texture of the cut trunk. I added these to the piece and included some seedlings. I also used leaves from the tree to imprint onto the piece with paint. What emerged was Tree Spirit and an honouring of this tree and my connection to nature.
